Some time in the mid-70’s ... Steven was relatively new in his Danil Shafran craze phase!! One evening in the boys dorm (next to John’s room, at the end of the corridor, over the kitchen), way after lights-out time, Jane Cowan bursts in and harangues us (well, mainly Steven) about how questionable and inappropriate Shafran was both (as ever inextricably linked) morally and musically. After what seemed like hours back and forth, Steven said, “well, at least he’s sincere”. Jane Cowan responded quick as a flash, “so was Hitler!”. Round one to Mrs Cowan!!!
